“Betty’s Things” is inspired and dedicated to the loving memory of talented, compassionate and incredible Woman, who overcame a number of adversities and a host of unthinkable tragedies in her short life.
Added pressures, emotional and physical overloads became Betty’s survival guide and challenged her to shift from fear of uncertainty to trusting life in the face of that which she could not know and understand.
Betty gave birth to her first child when she was 15 years old and was a Mother of five by age 24.
During this time Betty endured years of emotional and physical abuse which led to her fighting for her life after suffering two gun shots to her head.
At the age of 30 Betty became a Grandmother and thereafter adopted her Grandchild as well as her Cousins two children.
Despite life’s challenges Betty was never deterred from opening her heart and her home to those in need and found herself sheltering and caring for countless friends and family.
Apart from being an exemplary Woman, Betty held a full time day job, a part time night job, was a CPR instructor, and a volunteer school bus driver,
where she drove disadvantage children on trips they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to experience.
Betty enjoyed bowling, cooking, fishing and dancing but her real passion was sewing and crafting.
Betty’s passion would be placed on hold as tragedy knocks on her front door yet again.
Following the deaths of Betty’s two youngest son’s, she was motivated to partner with SFPD Homicide Division where she dedicating years of her life speaking to prison inmates all over the Bay Area, sharing the devastation of the lost of her two son’s, as well has as well as her own experience due to gun violence, hoping to help guide them on a different path in life.
Betty was awarded a number of awards and pinned “Mothers Of Courage”; for dedicating years of service to an organization that created homicide quilts in remembrance and in honor of those whose lives were ripped from them due to gun violence.
Some would agree, that Betty had every reason to call it quits and simply give up but,
Betty understood she had a larger purpose, far beyond her comprehension and was determined to rise above and to not become another victim of circumstance.
Betty was an extra-ordinary creature of GOD who was a servant of sorts to many throughout her life.
For this special person, her immeasurable love and sacrifices has inspired us all and has helped harness the pain of her absence today.
Betty dug deep into her heart and soul where she reawakened her passion for sewing and crafting. Betty seized every opportunity to learn all there was to know about sewing, embroidery Heat vinyl transfers, screen printing, and all crafting.
She purchased her first large multi-needle embroidery machine along with several other machines and birthed - Betty’s Things in year 2002.
Betty ran a very successful business while facing a number of illnesses and disabilities - which gradually weakened her fragile body, calling her home at just age 69.
